Science
At science this quarter, we were assigned to make a lab report on " how does food affect our ph level" In this quarter I showed knowledgeable and communication because throughout I was able to work with my group well and we were able to finish the work. Also we communicate to each other and discuss about each topic, that is why we could make a good lab report.
This is my best work because I got a good score for this one, and I felt happy that my group and I has achieved such a great work. I did well on editing the movie and gathering the information. I can improve by getting a higher score than the previous one. This sample can be related to communicators and thinker because I communicate with my group to gather the information and I think what to research about.
Lab Report:
Does digestion affect the food’s pH?
1. Research question
How does the food’s pH level affect the length of digestion?
2. Objectives
To find out whether food pH level affect the length of digestion.
3. Hypothesis
Food’s pH level does not affect the length of digestion. It is because the digestive system is strong enough to handle different food ph. The function of food with different pH level is to make it more neutral so the length of digestion will not be affected.
4. Theoretical background
The human digestive system, is a system that digests food to get the nutrients the body needs. The organs involved in the digestive system are the mouth, stomach, duodenum, Ileum, Colon and the Anus. The stomach involves the change of pH because the Hydrochloric acid works there which has a pH of 1-2. It mixs the food to break them down and to kill bad chemicals there. pH is the acronym of “Potential Hydrogen.” The pH is measured on a logarithmic scale that shows 1-14. Food also have pH. Different pH affect the length of digestion because they have to make it a specific pH to let them go through the digestive system. The components in saliva help keep the pH in your mouth between 6.5 to 7 so that the enzyme salivary amylase can start to break down carbohydrates. There are specific pH for each part of your digestive organs. If we have to much acid in our body, it can lead to acid reflux. But if acid reflux repeats, it could turn into Barrett’s esophagus which is a serious sickness. It could also lead to symptoms of heartburn.

9. Discussion and Evaluation
This experiment is mostly about digestive system. But if you say it specifically, it is done in the stomach. The stomach has a Hydrochloric acid that has about 1 or 2 ph. The food gets mixed with it and eventually has to be there for some time. The materials used in this experiment such as Hydrochloric acid represents the stomach’s acidity. We had to choose different foods to see if the digestion also affects their ph. We had to wait for 20 hours and 45 minutes because that was the timing for digestion.
After we blended the foods and then got their pH, we had to put the acid inside and then put the cling wrap over it and wait for 20 hours and 45 minutes. After we put the pH in again, the pH of the food gradually went down. It means that the digestive system does affect the pH of food.
The pattern is that the digestive system cooperates with each other. The system has to make each food equal to their maximum pH. The digestive system needs to have a limit to pH. That is why the digestive system helps with each other. The components in saliva help keep the pH in your mouth between 6.5 and 7 so that the enzyme salivary amylase can start to break down carbohydrates. The enzymes, and pepsin work best at a pH around 2 but in the other hand, the others that function in the intestines, including peptidases and maltase, work best at a pH around 7.5.
From the pattern, we can see that the alkaline foods and the acidic foods got more acidic and the pH went down.
10. Conclusion
Food’s pH level does affect the length of digestion. Acidic food and alkaline food do affect the length of digestion. The things that we eat and its pH will impact where our body’s pH level falls and our body’s pH will control the activity of every metabolic function happening in our body. We have to control what we eat, its acidity and alkalinity. Because the body makes the food that we eat become a certain pH for each organ, it could take a longer time to digest. “Some people have acid reflux or heartburn, which means one part of the organ, can tolerate acid but the other cannot. If you have acid reflux, occasionally you may experience a burning sensation in your chest caused by a backup of stomach acid into your esophagus. The pain you feel is caused by the acidity of the stomach acid coming into contact with the esophagus, which lacks the protective lining of the stomach. It is caused by an abnormal functioning of the lower esophageal sphincter at the top of you stomach that allows the acid to reflux.” (http://www.livestrong.com/article/462267-the-acidity-of-food-its-effect-on-our-digestive-system/)
Acid reflux can lead to serious health consequences. If you get repeated times of acid reflux, you could damage the esophagus which could cause a condition called Barrett’s esophagus. From this we can learn that different pH food can affect the digestive system. So the conclusion is that food’s pH does affect the length of digestion.
