Science
For science this quarter, we are assigned in groups to take care an organism that we assigned by the teacher. My group are William, Hesky and Grady, and our organism is lizard. We are told to check the lizard and take care of it for a month and make a schedule, lab report and presentation afterwards. I showed Risk - Taker, and open minded and reflective. Cause I took the risk on holding the animal ( I'm scared with animals) and I wash the cage. I reflect on my mistakes, such as giving water too much or giving food to much. I was open minded because I took comments from my friends so I could take care the animal better. In the future I will make a better lab report and taking care of my organism.
Lab Report:
Mini Artificial Ecosystem of a Wild Lizard
BY: Matthew, William, Grady and Hesky
Introduction
The name of my organism is Wild lizard. The color of our lizard is dark green, it is quite big and the length of the lizard is around 20cm long. The original habitat of the lizard is usually in the tropical forest, which the forest has a lot of different kind of trees, leaves and plants. There are also water and different kind of food. The physical factors that can be found in the forest are trees, plants, leaves, bush, water and other things. The biotic factors found in the forest would be grasshoppers, crickets, and other kind of bugs.
In our artificial habitat, we bought a square glass aquarium to put the organism in it. We put some banana leaves in the aquarium because our type of lizard feels more comfortable with the banana leaves. They like to hide under the banana leaves. We cut a cup to put a little bit of water inside it, for the organism to drink. We also put rocks to make them feel more comfortable with their new habitat. The physical factors that can be found in their new habitat are banana leaves, rocks, water, wind, temperature and light. The biotic factors found in the new habitat are cricket and also the lizard.
The food that we gave to the lizard is only crickets. We fed them 4 times a day, because there are two lizards in our artificial habitat. Each lizard only eats two crickets a day, for day and night. The foods that can be found in the forest would be grasshoppers, crickets and other kind of bugs. The lizard can survive in their original habitat by adapting to their habitat, finding food, eat their prey, and drink water and being comfortable with their habitat. It is the same thing with our artificial habitat, they drink water that we provided, we let them hide in the banana leaves to feel comfortable and we fed them crickets.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis for this project is to make a comfortable artificial habitat for our organism and they will survive in the habitat that we made.
Materials and Equipments
Materials
- Aquarium
- Banana Leaves
- Sprayer
- Water
- Rocks
- Crickets
- Lizards
- Metal Net
The aquarium is for keeping the lizard, so they won’t escape. Banana leaves are for the lizard to feel more comfortable, because our type of lizard needs to have a lot of banana leaves because they feel safe and comfortable with it. We use rocks to make it feel like home. We need water for the lizards to drink. Sprayer is filled with water, so twice a day we will spray it, so they won’t be to dry. Crickets are for them to eat. The lizards are needed for the project. We cover the aquarium with metal net, to keep them safe and they won’t try to escape from the aquarium.
Equipments
- Scissors
- Gloves
- Tissues
Scissors are needed to cut the banana leaves into small bit of pieces. Gloves is for cleaning the manure of the lizard, so the aquarium will stay clean and smell good. Tissues can be used to clean the aquarium as well.
Procedures
We took an aquarium and cleaned it first. Then find rocks around the school to placed 5 rocks in each corner. Afterwards we find a plastic cup and cut the bottom part only. Then fill it with clean water. Place the cup in the middle. Find enough rock, to surround the cup. Then placed the two lizards in the aquarium. Cover everything with a lot of banana leaves. Give the lizard four crickets each day. Spray the lizard twice a day. Clean aquarium once a week.
1. Take the aquarium and clean it
2. Place them in a place where you can find heat
3. Find 20 rocks
4. Place 5 in each corner
5. Find a plastic cup
6. Clean the cup
7. Cut the bottom part only
8. Fill it with water
9. Place it in the middle part of the aquarium
10. Find enough rocks to place it around the cup
11. Put the two lizard
12. Cover everything with a lot of banana leaves
13. Fed them 4 crickets a day
14. Spray with water twice a day
15. Clean aquarium once a week
The design of our artificial habitat from bird eye view:
The small circles represent the rocks that are located in each corner of the aquarium. The big square represents the aquarium. The big circle in the middle represents the cup that we cut. The wave lines represent water. The small oval shapes represent the pebbles that are located around the cup. The white parts are the banana leaves.
Discussion
The prediction of my project was to see if the lizard survives in their new habitat. It appears that the lizard was able to survive or adapt with their new home where we made it. Giving them food, water, cleaning their cage and spraying them with water helped them to feel comfortable with their new home. The hypothesis was correct, because the lizard look a bit bigger, it is still breathing and they are healthy. The lizard survived, the organism was well adapted to their new habitat, because we made the habitat based on our research about forest, and it works.
Conclusion
- It was to see if the lizard survives with us
- We made an aquarium based on research
- The habitat we made works
- The lizard is healthy and strong
- It survives, they did not catch any sickness
- The project was accomplished
The improvement that we think we should make was to find a bigger aquarium so they can walk freely, bigger cup because they drink a lot. More bananas leave because the lizard really likes it. We should feed them more crickets so they will stay strong and gets bigger.
